Who We Are: Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.

We are a small rural church steeped in a long history of God-fearing, Jesus-loving people who believe love is a verb. We are part of the worldwide United Methodist Church and align with the mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, as set forth by Jesus Christ in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Hopewell United Methodist Church follows the teachings of Jesus to feed the hungry, clothe the needy, comfort the sick and lost, care for those in need, and reach out and welcome the stranger.  John Wesley calls us to focus on God’s love–not punishment of man–for salvation is available for all and taught all Methodists to pray without ceasing, be a singing, joyous people, and put love into action.  This is our mission, our vision, and our way.

Our History

In the early 1800s Methodists in central Ohio worshiped in their cabin homes or in barns.  In 1805 Rev. James Quinn organized the Hopewell Society in Ezekiel Groom’s log house. The Hopewell Society was known for many years as “Groom’s Class.”  It is believed to be among the first (perhaps the very first) church organizations in Madison Township, Franklin County, Ohio.

The first Hopewell church building was built on property that Ezekiel and Rhoda Groom sold to the Society in about 1819. The frame building was erected about a quarter mile up the creek from the present church at the old Hopewell cemetery. The deed is dated June 19, 1819 for twenty dollars in specie to Charles Rarey, Alexander Cameron, and Adam Havely of Franklin County, and Shadrack Cole, William Brown, Daniel Ranier, and David Morris of Pickaway County, Trustees.  This building was used until 1844. On December 22, 1852, Thomas Groom, Ezekiel’s son, was given permission to take away the old church. It was reported that Isaac Rainier tore it down.

In 1844 Michael Ebright, father of Mrs. John F. (Allie) Rainier, built a new church near what is now London-Lancaster Road and near Little Walnut Creek Bridge. The church served until 1901 when a remodeling took place under the pastorate of Rev. J.F. Grimes. The reopening of the church was on January 26, 1902 with Rev. J.C. Arbuckle.

In 1917 under the pastorate of Rev. Charles A. Hughes it became necessary to move the church to its present location to accomodate a road-straightening program when the covered bridge by the church collapsed. A church basement was added and other improvements were made.

In April 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church merged. Hopewell’s name changed to Hopewell United Methodist Church.

A 2300 square foot addition was added to the church in 1970. The much needed addition provided eight rooms for Sunday School Classes, two restrooms and a utility room. It was decided to move the main entrance from the left front to the center of the church. Lyle Ackerman cleaned the boards and used colored glass from old windows to make the hanging lights for the sanctuary.  In 1980-1981 substantial renovations were again made. In November 1990 an elevator lift was constructed on the west side of the church making the church handicap accessible. A chair lift from the lower level of the entrance to the narthex was added in 2020.

On April 30, 1998 the Hopewell Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in honor of deceased members. Contributions to this Fund are often given in honor or memory of current or former congregants. The scholarship continues to give financial support to Hopewell’s young members who are continuing their education beyond high school.

In 2005 Hopewell celebrated its bicentennial with special activities each month.  “Hopewell History 1805-2005” was published and is available in the church library. It includes many historical pictures.

Worship With Us

We are a church that is blessed to be able to worship in many places and ways–we meet in person in the Sanctuary at 10:30 am each Sunday morning; we broadcast our service on YouTube; you can watch live or later at your convenience (be sure to subscribe to our channel and click the link “bell” to receive notifications when new videos are posted).

Our worship service typically lasts about an hour and includes singing (mostly traditional hymns, with some praise music), liturgy, prayer, children’s message, scripture and a message. Feel free to dress casually in shorts/jeans/t-shirts/sweatshirts or dress up in your Sunday best–come dressed in whatever makes you feel most comfortable!  A staffed nursery is provided for babies and young children. All volunteers that supervise children have been trained in Safe Sanctuary procedures and have undergone a background check. A copy of the procedures can be found here.

We also offer Sunday School (children and adult classes) and Bible Study each week to study God’s word in depth.  Sunday School meets at 9:30 am Sunday mornings.  Bible Study is held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday evenings via Zoom. The scripture for the following Sunday is studied. Contact Pastor Wendy at pastorwendyhs@gmail.com or the meeting link; she can also provide technical assistance for those needing help using Zoom. You do not need to attend our church to participate.

If you’d like to receive a copy of our weekly Bulletin (order of service), please send an email to HopewellUMCGroveport@gmail.com and we’ll add you to our email list. This week’s Bulletin can be found here

Ministries & Missions: How We Show Love...

Jesus commanded us to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…and Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 20:36-39).  We do our best to follow that commandment, and to put those words into action through our mission outreach projects.  We are also taught in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 to “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”  We are a small congregation but we are mighty in the ways we reach out in love and deed to help the neighbors in our community and beyond.

Mission Year Round

Each month, the Hopewell MYR committee designates a group, charity or organization that we collect donations for that are non-monetary; the committee entertains suggestions from the congregation on groups to assist. Several examples of this would be:

Vacation Bible School

Each summer we invite children to attend our Vacation Bible School program. VBS includes activities and songs centered around stories or themes from Scripture to help teach children about God.  In order to keep all children safe, our church participates in “Safe Sanctuary” training, procedures and guidelines (here: drive.google.com/file/d/1_qGwdOmt7YbRXI7AIim2XEkvG2KcDslM/view?usp=sharing).

Food Pantries

The Hopewell congregation donates food and paper products as part of our Mission Year Round Program to three food pantries in our community: Canal Winchester, Groveport and Ashville. Usually one or two particular items are selected for one month, i.e. peanut butter and jelly for one month, maybe bathroom tissue for a different month.  We also collect much-needed, low inventory items weekly. Items are usually selected that will be fairly inexpensive and not infringe upon folks’ budgets, allowing wide participation. At the end of each month, items are gathered, inventoried and then delivered to the designated group or organization.  This is an on-going project.

Adopt-A-Family

We adopt families at Thanksgiving and Christmas to provide not only full holiday dinners, but also groceries and snacks to help them get through the holiday season. Our congregation also generously provides Christmas gifts that include not only toys that the children “wish” for but pajamas, clothing, coats, gloves, hats and sometimes shoes to a family in need so that they experience the “reason for the season” at a time that they may not feel much in the holiday spirit due to their circumstances.

Fifth Sunday Mission

During months that have a “fifth” Sunday, we often go out into the community before worship service and prepare and serve meals to children, women and men at Faith MissionRonald McDonald House, and New Life Community Outreach.

Community Outreach

We have worked on various projects, including building raised garden beds for Canal Winchester Food Pantry, Hazel’s House of Hope, and Jackson Area Ministries; painting and doing home maintenance work for those in need; preparing and serving meals for families at Ronald McDonald House and various homeless shelters; participated in Kairos prison ministries; brought Elder Bible School programs to long-term care facilities; and visiting and ministering to shut-ins.  If you know of someone in need that could use some assistance, please reach out to us at HopewellUMCGroveport@gmail.com.

Connect & Giving: "God loves a cheerful giver."

2 Corinthians 9:7

CLICK HERE TO GIVE. We appreciate your continued support of Hopewell through your Tithes, Offerings and Gifts. There are many ways you can give.  Our on-line giving option allows one-time or recurring contributions via credit/debit card or checking/savings account.  While we encourage eGiving, those attending worship services in person can still place their tithes and offerings in the collection plate in the back of the church; or checks can be made out to Hopewell UMC and mailed to June Porter, Financial Secretary, 5875 Lancaster Road, Groveport, OH 43125. Thanks to the generosity of our members, congregation and visitors, we are able to continue to carry out the important spiritual work within the church and beyond.
